LEADING CITY LAW PRACTICE – SENIOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE

CITY

This globally renowned firm, one of the world’s leading professional services businesses, has recently opened up a number of roles which it believes are specifically suited to ex-military Officers.  This is one of them.  The specification below is their original, but in essence we are looking for:

  • Proven ability proactively to build productive, trust based relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong project management abilities (and ideally qualifications)
  • A credible personality in the Professional Services environment
  • Staff training, and ideally experience: the ability to communicate / write well
  • Leadership, planning, crisis management and influencing skills
  • Intellect: at least degree standard

  • Some budgeting experience
  • Useful (but not essential) would be:
    • Some exposure to Cyber Security issues
    • Prior commercial experience in a Business Development, Marketing or Sales role, ideally in Professional Services

Role / Primary Responsibilities:

This role focuses on advising and supporting the Intellectual Property practice in London (and other relevant offices outside of Australia) and the global cyber security practice

Key Internal Relationships:

Primarily BD Lead, Disputes, IP London partners, IP international partners (ex-Australia), London IP associates, global cyber security core partner and associate group and wider Disputes BD team.

Secondary the wider cyber security partner and associate network (includes global data protection team, CC&I, FSR, Corporate, Employment, IP and Disputes teams), TMT practice, Clients & Sectors team; London BD team; BD colleagues based across the international network and other practice areas, Pricing team, PR and members of the communication & marketing teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Building subject knowledge, relationships and credibility:

  • Develop strong relationships with the partners, fee earners and PSLs in the global Intellectual property and cyber security practices
  • Develop a deep understanding of your groups' specific practice areas, relevant client issues and the wider Disputes practice and the firm. Develop equally strong relationships across BD so that you can connect effectively your practices with the wider network
  • Maximise collaboration between London IP practice and other practices.
  • Supporting the development of a structured cyber security practice, with engagement of key partners and BD across the global network
  • Work with fee earners and PSLs to proactively identify, discuss and maximise business opportunities based on market activity and strategic issues affecting the practice

    Pitches, proposals and capability statements:

  • Liaise with partners and BD colleagues across the global network on drafting significant practice and firm-wide pitches for IP and cyber security
  • Project manage all aspects of tender responses and pitches, including drafting material and obtaining input from various contributors
  • Develop strong and consistent key selling messages
  • Participate in/assist with the rehearsal of the pitch team
  • Manage relevant communications including the debrief process internally and externally
  • Lead on London IP and Cyber Security pitches , and provide guidance and support on pitches driven out of other offices/practices
  • Lead and project manage multi-office and/or cross-practice pitches in the cyber security practice

    Reputation enhancement, brand & profile:

  • Raise awareness of the firm's cyber security capability internally
  • Project manage the development of marketing collateral with design and production team, including collateral relevant to target markets
  • Provide guidance on new product launches and marketing of new and nascent practice areas and client offerings
  • Planning, developing and delivering bespoke marketing campaigns to introduce new products and client solutions, and to raise the profile of the firm in specific practice areas and sectors
  • Project manage legal directories and award submissions for the practice
  • Liaise with the PR /communications team on all media and PR opportunities for practice
  • Liaise with fee earners, PSLs and knowledge management on articles for external publications and on content for client materials

    Management of projects, people, information and budgets:

  • Delegate to and guide BD and other colleagues in other teams collaborating on BD initiatives
  • Pro-actively work with the pricing team and partners and associates to develop innovative pricing proposals for the IP and cyber practices
  • Manage the content and development of various business development databases
  • Contribute ideas to improving processes and systems within the team and take responsibility for such projects, taking an active role in the credentials project
  • Support production and development of internal and external newsletters and bulletins
  • Provide advice regarding choice of events, invitations and programmes
  • Facilitate budgeting for specific events/campaigns and ensure suggested BD activities reflect best return on investment for the practice
  • Analyse outcomes against costs and recommend changes as appropriate. Work with global BD colleagues as global BD lead for cyber security coordinating and leading initiatives to develop cyber practice and profile globally
  • Work with global BD colleagues and provide support and guidance on business development activities relevant to the practice
  • Develop – and lead, as appropriate – a BD network to support the activities of the cyber security and IP groups

    Strategy and planning:

  • Prepare and implement business development plans for the IP and Cyber security practices
  • Provide tactical and strategic advice to the IP and cyber security partners to achieve their business development strategy.
  • Facilitate detailed, constructive, structured thought and decision making on the strategic position of the IP practice in the market
  • Support the delivery of structured thought leadership in IP in support of firm strategy
  • Work with IP associates to strengthen their BD skills and agree personal BD plan to aid their career progression.
  • Collaborate on presentations and documents that provide high level overview of practice/sector plans and achievement
  • Manage distinct additional firm-wide or practice projects as required
  • Helping fee earners to engage with relevant industry associations and professional bodies

    Key client targeting activities:

  • Keep abreast of client issues to enable pro-active identification of business opportunities and assist the partners to pursue them
  • Promote and participate in the client listening programme
  • Prepare innovative materials for clients
  • Project manage client events including strategic planning, logistics, implementation, active participation in them and meeting clients
  • When required undertake or commission research and analysis to identify targets for practice and take responsibility for targeting initiatives
  • Identify and co-ordinate cross-selling opportunities with other practice areas, sector specialists and relationship partners
  • Organise targeting teams and their BD activities, take responsibility for actions and drive forward their successful overall completion
  • Suggest products/services to introduce to targets
  • Work with fee-earners to produce content for clients, marketing campaigns and marketing channels

Qualifications / Skills / Experience

  • Strong project management skills. Sound organisational, planning and project administrative skills
  • Experience of managing key client events preferable
  • Bachelor's degree (or similar) in relevant area preferred
  • 3-5 years of business development/marketing experience in a corporate or partnership environment
  • Prior experience and high interest levels in one or more of the respective practice areas preferred, especially around technology
  • Demonstrated experience in building successful relationships, working in a diverse team and generating ideas around implementation solutions.
  • Ability to confidently communicate (in writing and verbally) and deal with partners / managers / other staff and clients
  • Professional and commercial approach to business, with a desire to learn and an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset
